The Dog Days of Summer

It’s the Dog Days of Summer!! What do we do now? How are your pets enjoying the long sunny days?

Summer is probably my favorite season! I think my dogs love it the most too due to the longer days and much more time outside in the evening. Sometimes we all sit on the deck together. Other days, we sit on the front porch so they can run around in the yard and smell all the things and bark at the wind. My dogs don’t love swimming. Calvin will occasionally venture a few feet into our pond if his boy is there and he thinks he needs saved from the scary pool noodles. So, water sports aren’t generally one of our summer treats. We do make a few more trips to get ice cream in the summer at our local favorites like Yup’s and The Chief. An occasional pup cup is always a big hit!

Feline Features & Cat Tales

As for my house cats – they could basically care less what season it is. They don’t go outside ever. But, they do enjoy lying in the sun near the back door during whatever season it may be. I have been bringing in fresh catnip from my garden though. That has been a huge hit and caused some hilarious reactions. And as it dries in my kitchen, it is an ongoing circus. Of course, summer means flies in the house, especially if you live in the country. I have one cat that is a champion fly catcher. Which would be fantastic if she didn’t destroy things on her quest to snatch the fly right out of the air!

My barn cats (that spend most of their time at my house) are very happy to help patrol my garden! They run right in every time I open the gate to go in and do a walk through, weed, plant, pick, etc. They climb through each raised bed checking for bunnies or anything else they may find. I wish they were a better ground hog deterrent! Once they have made their rounds, they flop down in whatever bed I’m working in and get as many pets and rubs as possible. So, I think it’s safe to say summer is their favorite season as well! They also appreciate the catnip that I grow for them.
